Chilean scientists are using red algae to create a natural compound with digestive properties that could have applications in the food industry

Red algae pigment in animal feed is a key factor in the development of natural ingredients with improved digestibility.

In practice, this means that the focus is not only on the colour or the marine origin of the pigment, but also on how it is released and how much of it the organism can utilise.

Furthermore, the work by Chilean researchers also observed cytotoxic activity of the R-phycoerythrin extract on the human HCT-116 colon cancer cell line. Nevertheless, this finding should be interpreted with caution, as it is a laboratory result, not a clinical conclusion or a treatment.

Looking ahead, the most significant finding is that encapsulation may help a sensitive natural compound reach the intestinal tract more effectively.
