BIOCHAINS Atlantic

A transnational project to boost algal biomass in the Atlantic Area

BIOCHAINS Atlantic is a transnational cooperation project developed within the European Atlantic Area, a region with strong natural, social and economic potential for the sustainable use of algal biomass. The project addresses common challenges shared by Atlantic regions related to the valorisation of microalgae and macroalgae, the sustainability of their value chains and their effective integration into the market.

The project combines strategic analysis, applied innovation and cooperation between territories, aiming to deliver practical and transferable solutions that contribute to strengthening the blue economy across the Atlantic Area.

Objectives

Identify and engage key stakeholders across the biomass value chain to ensure collaboration and knowledge exchange

Asses current biomass value chains to develop scalable models tailored to the Atlantic

Test the scalability of biomass solutions through pilot projects and develop commercialization-ready prototypes

Geographic areas involved

BIOCHAINS Atlantic is implemented in four countries of the European Atlantic Area:

  • Spain

  • Portugal

  • France

  • Ireland

Each territory contributes specific expertise, knowledge and capacities, supporting a shared vision for the algal sector and the development of solutions adapted to different regional contexts.

Transnational cooperation among these regions allows common challenges to be addressed jointly and reinforces territorial cohesion within the blue economy.

Activities and working approach

The project is structured around a set of interrelated activities that address the challenges of the algal sector in an integrated manner. These activities include:
  • Mapping key stakeholders and analysing their needs along the value chain

  • Assessing market trends, consumer behaviour and regulatory frameworks

  • Developing value chain models supported by digital decision-making tools

  • Implementing innovative pilot projects as demonstrators in real applications

  • Promoting collaboration networks and knowledge transfer between regions

This approach enables progress from strategic analysis to practical validation, ensuring results that are applicable and replicable across the Atlantic Area.

A complementary partnership

Collaboration among partners from different countries and profiles is a key element of the project, enabling challenges in the algal sector to be addressed from multiple perspectives and maximising the impact of the actions developed.

This partnership brings together expertise in areas such as algal biomass, technological innovation, market analysis, regulation and industrial valorisation, ensuring a multidisciplinary and results-oriented approach.
